Scottish National Meeting |
8th July
2011 |
|
Despite there being no
County Captain to organise it officially, a team was magically
entered into the County Sextette competition at the 'Scottish'
meeting at Castletown this week. Take the County teams link on
the left to see how they got on (towards the bottom of the page).
Sinclair Bruce of
Balerno & Currie won the Scottish Championship for the Earl Haig
trophy.
One of the most
successful shooters of the whole meeting was Adam Dove of George
Watson's College, who won 13 competitions in D class (a couple of which
were for his club team successes). An amazing achievement.
Scotland won both the
Open and Women's international matches. |

Dalkeith Buccleuch Rifle Club |
7th July
2011 |
|
It's our sad task to
have to report that due to dwindling numbers the Dalkeith club has
had to close down and disband. The club originally used a range near
the entrance to Dalkeith Palace and in recent years after that was
no longer made available to them, has had the use of Pathhead's
range. It is understood that those shooters remaining will be
joining another club in the area. |

The entry
forms for the NSRA's
Scottish and
Bisley championships are now available. Click on the links for
each meeting to download the relevant copy. The Scottish
meeting takes place at Castletown, near Thurso, from 2nd to 8th July.
Entries close on 1st June. The Bisley meeting is from 13th to 21st
August.
County Captain Bill
Hamilton remarked: "Let's see if we can get
a Lothian team in the County Sextette at Castletown. For the
first time for many many years we failed to enter a team at last year's
'Scottish'
due to insufficient numbers, so here's hoping enough Lothian
shooters can make the trip this time. You will be assured of a
warm welcome in Caithness, so why not take the family for a
staycation and
visit the many local tourist attractions on your days off from the range."

Individual Championship |
28th
Mar
2011 |
|
The Final of the
Individual Championship was held at Balerno & Currie last Saturday
evening. The winner was Alasdair Horne of the host club, who
beat Niall Georgeson of Pathhead in the final of the knock-out
competition.
Update: Only three of the original eight qualifiers and five
reserves could attend, making a mockery of the whole competition.
It's supposed to be a knock-out competition, but the Organiser on
the night reorganised it a little to avoid giving someone a bye into
the final. The three competitors would each shoot two cards
and the top two would go head-to-head in a final. Norrie
Steele from Lanark dropped out in the first round with 185, and
Alasdair Horne (199) and Niall Georgeson (194) shot the final.
Alasdair scored 195 to Niall's 188 to take the Whitton Cup for the
second year running. |

| Team
Postal league |
20th
Mar
2011 |
|
The final round of the
Team Postal League has just been completed and the winners are now
known:
Division 1 was won by Selkirk.
Losing to 3rd-place Watsonians in round 9 didn't help them, and it came
down to the last match against long-time leaders Pentland. The
team from Caithness had a nightmare and Selkirk had a very good score to
win on aggregate after tieing on points. Balerno & Currie had the
top score of the season in round 10 (398), but by then it was all over
for them.
Division 2 was won by Balerno
& Currie B. They had the best average by some way so deserved
their win. Leven A were the best of the rest.
The runaway winners of
Division 3 were Lanark A, with George Watson's College A some way
behind.
Division 4 just could not have
been closer. Selkirk B just edged out George Heriot's FB by one single
aggregate point after tieing on match points. Heriot's will be
rueing their narrow losses in both rounds 1 and round 9
Division 5 was even more
dramatic. No fewer than three teams tied on points for the lead,
but Leven B's aggregate was better than Pathhead's which was better than
Kinross & Milnathort's. Pathhead were a card short in round 2 - if
that had been a complete team they would have won.
Another tie in Division 6 saw
first-time-entrants Wishaw take the honours on aggregate from Selkirk C.
The best average award goes to
Eric Brown of Selkirk, with an average of 99.4. Eric also lifts
(if he's strong enough) the trophy for the best percentage improvement in average
from last year's competition, from 97.2 to 99.4.

| Cities
& Boroughs Match |
14th
Mar
2011 |
|
The NSRA have decided to
cancel this year's match due to lack of entries. Only three
teams have entered and they will not run it for that small a
competition.
This is disappointing
news for this long-standing event, and we fervently hope it will be
run next season. |

Championships |
11th
Mar
2011 |
|
The results of the first
stage of the Individual Championship have been released, including
the winners of the subsidiary competitions. The eight qualifiers for the Knock-Out Final meet
at Balerno & Currie's range on Saturday 26th March.
Ladies Champion:
G Travers (Lanark)
Veterans Champion: F Gifford (Balerno & Currie)
Junior Champion; R Devoy
(Lanark)
Inexpert A:
No entries
Inexpert B:
C Guest (Prestonpans)
There was a very poor
entry. Only three clubs
within Lothian entered this competition, which is quite
incomprehensible to this writer. They presented only 9
competitors out of the total entry of 24 (one of whom is from
Caithness). There were more entrants from the Lanark club than from all
the Lothian clubs put together. Why don't people enter their
local championship? |

| "World
Cup" FInal |
6th Mar
2011 |
|
The Final stages of the
Association's "World Cup" competition took place yesterday at
Balerno & Currie's range. Congratulations to Sinclair Bruce of the
host club for winning the trophy for the first time. He beat
clubmate and multiple winner winner of this competition Alasdair
Horne after a shoot-off in the final, having tied on 198. The Plate
was won by David Simpson (Wick Old Stagers), and the Bowl by his Dad
Hugh (becoming the first person to have won that twice, which, as a
former overall winner, is perhaps not a record he would wish for).
The Association wishes
to thank Balerno & Currie Rifle Club for the use of their range and
also Alasdair Horne for arranging the catering. Thanks are also due
to thank Anne Hamilton for doing the scoring and John Buchanan for
running the range. Our furthest traveller not in line for an award,
Heather Doyle from Wigan, presented the prizes.

Commonwealth Cities Match |
11th Nov

The result of the
Commonwealth Cities match has just arrived and shows that
Edinburgh's lengthy run of victories has finally come to an end.

unavailabilities we were defeated by 15 point by Melbourne.
Auckland, the only other entrant, did not return their cards. Take the County teams link on the

| BSA Cup
& Women's County Match |
30th
Oct
2010 |
|
The results for the BSA Cup and the
Women's County matches have just come in.
Lothian were 5th in both
competitions. Unusually, the BSA Cup was won by an entry from
the Commonwealth, Auckland. With Victoria coming second,
Surrey third and Wellington fourth it was a strong showing from our
friends from New Zealand and Canada. Lothian were thus second
in the UK stakes among the 11 entries in the top Section of this
competition with a much-improved score from last year and that's
something we can be proud of.
In the Women's County match, Lothian
were quite well down on the winning score but definitely have the
potential to improve.
