Entries & Affiliation
                                                                                                 28th August 2008
Forms were sent to club secretaries some time ago.  Entries for the Postal and Shoulder-to-Shoulder leagues are due on 15th September.  Don't be late!  If any club not currently affiliated to the Association wishes to participate in any of its activities, please email the secretary for the relevant forms.

Cities & Boroughs                                                                                                    28th August 2008
Edinburgh again won the NSRA's Cities & Boroughs competition, beating runners-up Torfaen by a comfortable 14 points. Take the County Teams link on the left to see the scores.

Scottish Meeting 2008 (Dumfries)                                                                             16th July 2008
There was again a poor turnout of representatives from Lothian.   We need our own outdoor range to encourage local shooters to take up this fascinating aspect of our sport.  Once again shooters from George Watson's College did very well.  Fraser Cheetham won six trophies from C class, but the outstanding achievements were by Rory McAlpine. Shooting in A Class, he won 5 trophies winning the unsquadded aggregate and coming a close third in the squadded aggregate.  He will be promoted to X class, making him officially one of the top shooters in the country.  He also gained his first full Scotland international cap, no easy thing to do at the Scottish where contention for places in the team of ten is much higher than at Bisley.  These are magnificent achievements for a 17-year-old.  In all, the school shooters won 17 trophies among them, including the retention of the Sharpshooter trophy for disc-breaking and the Junior Team trophy.

The County Sextette did not do so well, finishing 5th (Rory was top scorer).

The weather was a contrast to last year's wet and muddy Lauder, as most days were completely dry (there was one memorable very short, sharp deluge) with firm underfoot conditions.  There was a very difficult tailwind all week though, which some shooters mastered better than others!

Annual General Meeting                                                                                          10th June 2008
The AGM of the Association will be held at Balerno & Currie RC on Thursday 19th June, commencing 7.45.  The meeting will be followed by the presentation of prizes.  All members of affiliated clubs are invited to attend.

SSRA Inter-Region matches                                                                                      22nd April 2008
On Sunday 20th, Lothian sent a team to the SSRA's All-Ranges and Inter-Regional shoot at Denwood in Aberdeen.  We had won both the indoor and outdoor Regional matches for the last two years, but with what might be considered a slightly under-strength team after only one of the original selection could attend, our hopes were slightly tempered.  However the indoor team came up trumps and won the 25-yard match by a mere 4 points from Forth & Clyde.  Lothian were third in the outdoor match, which saw low scoring from everyone due to the very testing wind conditions.

Individual Postal League                                                                                           8th April 2008

Div 4:   K Karle (Balerno & Currie)
Div 5:   L Downie (Edinburgh University)
Div 6:   A Paterson (Prestonpans)
Div 7:   L Cummings (Dalkeith)

Take the link on the left to see the full results for each division, and an averages list.

That concludes the Association's competition programme for clubs for the indoor season.  Three County League results are still awaited from the NSRA.  The County team will shoot the BSA Cup match cards later this week, and the Edinburgh team will shoot the Cities & Boroughs match next week. The status of the Commonwealth Cities match is currently unknown - we have entered but no stickers have arrived yet.  If it takes place we will probably shoot it at the start of next season as the shooting period normally extends to the end of September. The AGM and prizegiving will be held in May.

Team Postal League
1st April 2008
The last round of the Team Postal league has just finished, and in Division 1, Watsonians A came from behind to beat previous leaders Pentland in the last round to keep their winning streak going to five wins in a row in this competition.  Division 2 was won by Leven & District, Division 3 by Selkirk B, Division 4 by George Heriot's FP, and Division 5 by Selkirk C.

The top average prize was won by Alasdair Horne of Balerno & Currie, who also wins the Best Improvement trophy for increasing his average by the highest percentage from last season.

Association Individual Indoor Championship                                                          23rd March 2008
The final of the Individual Indoor Championship was held last night at Balerno & Currie's range. However, some of the Association's top shooters were unable to attend on the night, and furthermore only 11 shooters turned up and these included several reserves mostly from George Watson's College. This resulted in five byes in round 1 and the random draw saw to it that these were heavily loaded into the bottom half of the draw.  One competitor got byes straight into the semi-final.  The top half of the draw was almost full, however, and there were  some tough matches, the pick being Jim Michael of Selkirk versus clubmate Bill Vaughan, both of whom could have been considered a favourite.  Both were very off form though, and Jim won by 192 to 191. Oliver Barron from GWC (one of the best of the qualifiers) eased past John Milne (who scored the only 100 of the competition in this match) by 197 to 196, and Nick Baker (Watsonians) disposed of Ally Littlejohn of GWC.  Only four shooters were competing in the the bottom half, and the only R1 match saw Keith Nixon of Selkirk beating Stuart Law of GWC.  In R2, Baker beat Seale (reserve from GWC), Barron took care of a still-off-form Jim Michael, Nixon just squeezed past Alex Honhold of GWC in a low-scoring match and Marco Giglio of GWC got the bye into the Semis.  In this stage, the first semi final could be considered to the the Final, as it saw undoubtedly the two best shooters still standing competing against each other - Nick Baker and Ollie Barron.  The first card saw Nick take a lead with 99 to 97, and although Ollie picked up to a 99, Nick's 98 was enough to put him into the final.  The other semi was Nixon against Giglio and it resulted in a tie on 186 each.  The graduated gauges were brought out, and the .25 gauge resulted in another tie.  The next regauge resolved it, however, and Nixon progressed to the final.  The result was predictable, as Nick Baker won by 198 to 190, his second success in this Championship.  The 3rd/4th place shoot-off resulted in a convincing win for Ollie Barron over clubmate Marco Giglio.

Choose-your-own-Handicap                                                                                    23rd March 2008
The final of the CYOH was held recently, and it resulted in a close win for George Heriot's FP over Selkirk B.

Shoulder-to-shoulder League                                                                                  18th March 2008
Both divisions of the s/s league have been decided.  Division 1 was won by Lauder from Balerno & Currie, with one match in hand.  Division 2 was won by George Heriot's FP over Dalkeith.  Take the link on the left to see details.

County teams - progress
17th March 2008
The finishing line is in sight for all five county teams, with results up to round 8 all in (except the Reserves team which is run one round behind the others).  Here's a brief summary of each team's status:

Main team: Started off blindingly well with a score of 1960 x 2000 in round 1, one of our best-ever scores, but immediately followed it by 1937, one of our worst in recent years. Now languishing in 4th place after some undistinguished shooting.  Any wins (apart from R1) have been courtesy of the other teams shooting worse than us.
Reserves team: We're in a division too high. In 5th place with only two wins, being outclassed in most rounds.
Women's team: Division 1 is tough, and our ladies have the worst average, currently also in 5th place. They can all shoot well, but they have all been up and down at various points and the combinations haven't been working.
Junior team: The one bright spark, as last year.  However, having led the division for almost the whole programme so far, their last two rounds' estimated scores don't look good and they might be doing their best to throw this one away.  After R8 they have a three-point lead, but losing the last two matches might be their undoing.
3P: Currently in 3rd place two points behind having lost two matches, the chance of winning disappeared when R7 was lost to the leaders.  The last two rounds, if won, will only put them 2nd at best.

Championships
13th March 2008
The first stage of the Association's indoor Championship has been completed and the 16 qualifiers proceed to the Final knock-out stage at Balerno & Currie on 22nd March, where holder Frank Gifford will be hoping to retain his title.

The subsidiary Championships are decided on the first stage, and here are the results:
Ladies Champion             Beverley Burnside (Watsonians)         199
Veterans Champion          Jim Michael (Selkirk)                         198
Junior Champion              Rory McAlpine (George Watson's)      199 (after a tie-break with Oliver Barron)
Inexpert A Class              Isobel Filor (George Watson's)            182
Inexpert B Class              Louis Marinello (George Watson's)      159

Competitions summary
                                                                                              6th March 2008
All  of the Association's various competitions are well under way.  Here's a quick summary:
Team Postal League:  With only a couple of rounds to go, no  division is cut and dried yet.  In Division 1 Pentland A have a one-point lead over Watsonians A and two over Balerno & Currie A.  It might all come down to the last match where the first two meet each other, although any of these three teams could win.
Shoulder-to-Shoulder League: In Division 1, Balerno & Currie are battling it out with Lauder for the title, and it also might come down to the last match of the season.  They are currently on equal points having shot the same number of matches.  Two matches between these two teams have had to be postponed, so it will be interesting to see how it pans out. Division 2 is a two-horse race between George Heriot's FP and Dalkeith.  Heriot's have the advantage at the moment, being two points ahead and having a match in hand.
Individual Postal League: Round 2 of 3 (February's scores) have just been issued. Nick Baker of Watsonians is in a strong position in Division 1.
CYOH: The preliminary rounds have been completed and the Final will be George Heriot's FP A versus Selkirk B, on a neutral range.
Championships: The qualifying round has just been completed and the results will be issued to clubs imminently.  The Final will take place at Balerno & Currie on Saturday 22nd March.
World Cup:  The final of the World Cup took place on 1st March and resulted in a  record-breaking third successive win for Alasdair Horne of Balerno & Currie.  He also becomes the first person to win it four times in the 18-year history of this event.  Runner-up was Martin Sinclair of EU Alumni. Tim Kidner of Bon Accord won the Plate, and John Sinclair of Wick Old Stagers won the Bowl.

Early bath in the County Knock-out                                                                            20th Nov 2007
The County team in the NSRA's County Knock-out competition got an early shock with a defeat to Hertfordshire in Round 1.  This was as a result of one of Lothian's cards being disqualified. We would have won otherwise.  Take the County teams link on the left for the full scores.

BSA Cup and Women's County Competition                                                             31st Oct 2007
The results for these competitions are just in, and for the BSA Cup team it's another runner-up spot, same as last year.  A good score of 46 points dropped over the team of 12 saw us tied for second behind Caithness, who had a great score of only 38 dropped over the 24 cards.  The tie-break rule favoured us and we took second by virtue of having seven 100s to Auckland's six.  Medals will be distributed when they are received from the NSRA.

The Women's team did very well to come third, so in successive years we have been, er, last, then 7th, and now third, this time only 3 points behind the winners.  We can only win it next year.

Watsonians in Shoulder-to-Shoulder League Shock                                                 20th Sept 2007
It emerged today that Watsonians have not entered a team in the Shoulder-to-Shoulder League this season. This came as quite a shock to the other team representatives at tonight's meeting where the fixtures for the season are arranged.  Watsonians have won Division 1 for the last nine years in a row, but nonetheless other teams in the league were looking forward to having another crack at them this time.

When asked for an explanation, Watsonians' Captain Bill Hamilton had this to say: "I'm gutted.  We can't force any of our members to shoot in this or any other competition but I am really disappointed that only one or two of them were interested in shooting in this, when we need at least four. It can't be too much to ask.  We are the defending champions and have competed in this league every year since the club's inception in the 1920s and I'm very unhappy that this breakdown in continuity has happened on my watch.  It's not in the spirit of our club's history not to support what is the Association's flagship competition, and I sincerely hope we'll be back next year to re-take our crown".

The first matches in this year's league will take place early in October.  Take the link on the left to see results as they unfold over the season.

Cities & Boroughs
                                                                                                      20th Sept 2007
Edinburgh won this year's Cities & Boroughs competition with another record score, of 2368 x 2400, improving our record of last year by a whopping 9 points.  Congratulations to all the team on retaining the impressive Cities & Boroughs Trophy as well as the Wyllie Barr & Ross trophy for the best (and unfortunately only) Scottish team.  See here for the full team scores.
