Dave King It is with deep regret that we notify the shooting fraternity of the death of Dave King, President of Dalkeith Rifle Club, Secretary of the Individual Postal League and member of Executive Committee of the LSSA for many years. Dave left school aged 15 and went to work as a tea-boy at Mactaggart Scott at Loanhead, rising to the position of Chief Inspector prior to his retirement - after an astonishing 50 years of loyal and committed service with the firm - only last year. He was instrumental in founding one of the many social clubs sponsored by the company, “Mactaggart Scott Rifle Club” in 1967 with colleagues Brian Scott, Stewart Selkirk, Jock Strachan, Jimmy Butler, Bill Purves, Sandy Wilson and Jock MacKenzie, shooting at Glencorse Barracks. With financial support from the company, the six man team achieved the feat of winning the LSSA Second Division Shield in their first year, which was rewarded with the presentation of commemorative cuff-links (marked with crossed rifles!) to each member of the winning team by senior management of the company. This was one early highlight of a shooting career lasting over 40 years in the local area, and one which Dave himself remembered with gratitude; indeed Dave was still participating with success in competitive shooting up to a few weeks ago. Dave was President of Mactaggart Scott Rifle Club for many years, during which time they relocated from Glencorse Barracks ca. 1975 (due to the increasing difficulty of access to the facility) to Gorebridge Rifle Club’s range at Fushiebridge, near Birkenside/Gorebridge. When this range closed ca. 1980 due to redevelopment, Mactaggart Scott Rifle Club effectively merged with Dalkeith (Buccleuch) Rifle Club shooting at Dalkeith, which prevented the latter club from ceasing existence (due to the very low number of shooting members) at that crucial time. Mactaggart Scott Rifle Club continued to shoot as a four man team at Dalkeith, comprising Dave, Peter Gates, Dave Thornton and Steve Newlands. Dave continued to rack up the number of “possibles” at quite a rate at this time! Dave then became President of Dalkeith Rifle Club, and oversaw the relocation (again due to redevelopment of a rifle range) of the club from Dalkeith to share a range with Pathhead Rifle Club (shooting at Pathhead). As typified Dave’s quiet support and enthusiasm for the sport, he here continued to encourage youngsters in taking up the sport, namely Richard Darling last year (continuing a trend which included the induction of the 17 year old Dave Thornton in 1970!). Members of the shooting fraternity will surely remember Dave as a friendly, quietly determined and focussed person who though unassuming applied great effort and dedication over many (often difficult) years to the active promotion and administration of the sport both at club level, and within the LSSA. He will be missed by all that had the privilege of knowing him. Steve Newlands (Treasurer) On
behalf of Dalkeith Rifle Club
