News

Lothian Shooter wins World Junior Championship                                                                1st Aug 2006
At the World Championships in Zagreb last week, 20-year old Matthew Thomson of Watsonians won the World Junior (under 21) Prone Championship.  He scored 593 in testing conditions, holding off two other competitors only one point behind.  This is a fantastic achievement from the Edinburgh University student and repeats Jonathon Hammond's championship of 1998, the last British smallbore world champion..

NSRA Scottish National Meeting at Castletown (Caithness)                                                   11th July 2006
Lothian was represented at "The Scottish" last week by several members, mostly from Watsonians, with a contingent from George Watson's College.  The County team did itself proud by winning the "County Sextette" competition for the first time for some years.  The team was Bill Hamilton, Sinclair Bruce, Matthew Thomson, Beverley Burnside, Andrew Coates (all Watsonians) and Oliver Barron (George Watson's).  The oldest and the youngest (Bill and Oliver) had the joint top scores in the team.

Oliver was shooting in Class C and won a total of TEN individual trophies. His younger brother won the Under-15 championship too. Ones to watch!

Matthew Thomson had a good shoot in the final of the Earl Haig Scottish Long Range Championships, but finished  a narrow third behind Bill Copland of Ellon.  Matthew also managed a good haul of five trophies (including the Class A Aggregate) to set him up for his trip to the World Championships in Zagreb later this month in the under-21 section..

The Watsonian team also had a good meeting, winning both the 50 metres and 100 yards team competitions for the Pullar Targe and ICI Cup respectively.

Both international matches were won by Scotland, the ladies winning on home soil for the first time since 1987. Only two Lothian shooters made the team - Matthew Thomson and Sinclair Bruce - and Bill Hamilton was first reserve.

Inter-County Leagues                                                                                              22nd May 2006
The final results have at last been received from the NSRA, and our Main and Reserves teams have been biting their nails waiting for the last round's results.  Bite no more but celebrate, as both teams won their divisions by narrow margins.  The results for the Women's, Juniors and 3P teams have been in for some time, and the 3P team made it a triple win for the County.  Congratulations to all who participated. Take the County Teams link on the left to see the results.

Commonwealth Cities Match 2005 result                                                                         14th Dec 2005
Edinburgh retained the Commonwealth Cities Match trophy with a convincing lead of 30 points over second-placed Auckland, with Melbourne third.  Congratulations to the team, who will be receiving their winners' badges in due course.  The confirmed team scores have been on the website for some time, but the full match result can be seen here.  We are currently the holders of  this and the Cities & Boroughs, and came second in the BSA Cup and second in the County Sextette at Bisley in August.  Not too bad a season for the various teams representing the City and County.  Somehow, though, we couldn't retain our place in Division 1 of the County League for this winter.

BSA Cup result                                                                                                                  13th Nov 2005
Lothian achieved its best-ever result in the BSA Cup, coming second in the top section of this newly restructured competition.  Our score of 2,354 was only 4 points behind Hampshire, and another 4 ahead of the joint thirds Auckland and Sussex.  We win the Alexander Challenge Trophy for the highest-placed Scottish County. The 12 team members will receive a bronze medal in due course.  Take this link to get the full scores.

Our Women's team did not do so well in their equivalent competition, coming, er, last.

New content                                                                                                                        30th Oct 2005
New content has been added to include results from the Shoulder-to-Shoulder league.  I'll try to keep this up to date as I get results from the league secretary.  I've also included a lot of archive material on all the competitions, giving the winners of many of them as far back as the names on the trophies go.  They have not all been processed yet so some of these pages are incomplete.  I'm also adding photos of the trophies as I can get them, accessible from appropriate places.

As last year, results for the Team Postal league will also appear on this site as well as County Team scores and results as they come in.
